Despite having a large variety of major characters in his filmography, Kevin Bacon reveals the surprising role fans want to talk to him most about as that of his cameo in Will & Grace. Having made his acting debut with 1978’s National Lampoon’s Animal House, Bacon is one of the most iconic actors of the ’80s and ’90s thanks to his roles in everything from the teen music drama Footloose to the horror comedy Tremors. Bacon has also tried his hand at more blockbuster fare with the likes of Ron Howard’s Apollo 13, Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class and 2013’s R.I.P.D.
Created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, Will & Grace is also considered to be one of the most iconic sitcoms of the late ’90s and early ’00s, namely for having gay principal characters with Eric McCormack’s titular character and his best friend, Sean Hayes’ Jack. Initially running for eight seasons, the series would return for a three-season revival from 2017-2020, where it continued to score rave reviews from critics and audiences, though struggled to maintain consistent ratings. Throughout its run, Will & Grace saw a number of notable guest stars appear in the show, though one apparently continues to be more popular than the rest.
While appearing on the latest episode of Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes’ SmartLess podcast, Kevin Bacon reflected on his 45-year-long career. When asked if there were a particular role fans most wanted to talk to him about, the Golden Globe winner revealed a surprising choice as that of his cameo in Will & Grace, in which he starred alongside Hayes. See what Bacon said below:
I can’t tell you how many times I’ll do that walking-through-the-airport thing, Sean, and people will come up to me and say, “Do you know what the best thing you ever did was?” And it’ll be Will & Grace, and it doesn’t necessarily pop in to my head as one of the options. I had a great time doing it, don’t get me wrong, but yeah, that really made an impression on people.
Why Kevin Bacon’s Will & Grace Role Was So Memorable
Bacon would appear in Will & Grace season 5 as a fictionalized version of himself, with Jack stalking the iconic actor and inadvertently becoming his assistant, all in the hopes of getting to dance with the Footloose star. Though a brief cameo, Bacon’s role in the long-running sitcom has stood the test of time, namely for his willingness to poke fun at himself, as well as completely let loose for some of the episode’s more outrageous antics, including recreating his Footloose dance with Will near the end of the episode. For those who loved Bacon’s cameo in the series, it’s sure to be a sweet nod to know he is just as in love with his Will & Grace role as fans of the show.
Bacon’s time with Will & Grace wouldn’t end at the season 5 episode, with the actor even returning for the first part of the show’s original series finale for a dream sequence in which he married Sean Hayes’ Jack. Given the beloved sitcom has officially come to a close as of 2020, one can only hope that Bacon and Hayes’ continued fondness for one another leads to a reunion on a different project at some point in the future. In the meantime, audiences can revisit Bacon’s hilarious Will & Grace cameo with the entire series available to stream on Hulu and Prime Video now.
