Morbius, the Sony film released earlier this year, is making a return to theaters, according to ComicBook.com. Despite awful reviews across the board, and a lackluster performance at the box office, Morbius is coming back for more. The film reportedly had the second-worst box office drop in superhero genre history, dropping 73%, behind the 1997 film Steel starring Shaquille O’Neal.
The new show times start this Friday, with reports that the film will return in over 1,000 theaters across the United States. Despite the poor performance and initial reception, Morbius and Morb-related tweets have gone viral on Twitter over the past few weeks. One super-fan reportedly streamed the film on Twitch non-stop, for days. Fans have demanded Sony green light a sequel; at this point, it’s unclear who is being ironic and who is serious.
Nevertheless, Morbius is returning to theaters, and Sony certainly hopes that the cult following it’s collected show up to the cinema. Morbius made $163 million globally in its initial run against a reported $75 million budget. So naturally, the studio will want to make some of their money back, and capitalizing on the Morbius trend is the best way to do it.

If you aren’t on Twitter or plan on seeing the film for the first time, you may be wondering, who is Morbius? Michael Morbius is a doctor who is seriously ill with a rare blood disorder and is determined to save others from suffering the same fate. He attempts a desperate gamble, which initially appears to be a radical success. However, it’s soon revealed to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease itself. Daniel Espinosa directs the film, known for his work on Safe House (2012) and Life (2017). Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless wrote the screenplay.
This is the first time the character, Morbius, appears on the big screen, which may be the reason for some appeal regarding the film. Before release, Jared Leto seemed like the perfect actor to play the doctor turned vampire. However, the casting choices didn’t matter when critics had claimed the story was disjointed, the dialogue was plain bad, and there was little to no character depth. Despite the critics, you’ll get a chance to see Morbius in all its glory in theaters once again this Friday.
