A new game in the Amnesia series entitled The Bunker will offer players a whole new set of horrors, and will be the first to give them a weapon.

A new horror game in the Amnesia series called Amnesia: The Bunker is officially in development, and will be the first to offer players a weapon to defend themselves. Since the release of Amnesia: The Dark Descent in 2010, the horror series has garnered a cult following for its unique brand of scares and puzzling. Perhaps most famous for its sanity and fear mechanics, which impact how players perceive their environment, the series has seen three mainline entries so far.

Players who have gotten every ending in Amnesia: Rebirth can rejoice, as they’ll soon have a brand-new world of horrors to traverse, with a recently-released trailer from developer Frictional Games giving players a glimpse at what Amnesia: The Bunker has to offer. The trailer shows off the game’s eponymous setting, a WWI bunker that looks incredibly worse for wear. Footage shows a player in first person wandering around the blood-spattered setting holding a small light source, pocket watch, and – for the very first time – a gun with a single bullet in its chamber. The game is set to release in March 2023.

Amnesia: The Bunker – What’s Been Revealed So Far

Currently, there’s still a lot left to learn about Amnesia: The Bunker. While it can be assumed the game will likely be just as scary as Amnesia: Rebirth is to play – if not more so – that’s most of what’s discernible from the game’s ominous trailer. The games in the series have always been mysterious by nature, with little being revealed about them by developers, instead leaving players to learn for themselves. An accompanying press release for the game made note of more unscripted elements than previous titles and sandbox mechanics that involve manipulation of the environment, but no further details were given.

Considering the game is a continuation of the Amnesia series, Amnesia: The Bunker will likely draw from some of the same core elements of previous games in the series, but it’s hard to discern just how much that will be the case. It’s unclear right now if the video game will utilize sanity loss mechanics as most of its predecessors have, which for many is a fan-favorite device that sets the horror series apart from others. Besides the general threatening aura of the environment, it’s also unknown what the circumstances for the player being in the bunker are, and what threats await them there.

While much is left to be revealed about Amnesia: The Bunker, with Frictional Games behind the wheel – which has also produced the terrifying game SOMA alongside the Amnesia series – scares and haunting atmospheres are guaranteed. Players will finally be able to defend themselves with a weapon instead of hiding in the darkness, opening up a whole new dimension of gameplay. No exact release date has been given yet for Amnesia: The Bunker, but this promising new trailer has given horror game fans a lot to look forward to next spring.
