It is no secret that Patrick Stewart returns to his role of Professor Charles Xavier, aka Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but while this variant of his original X-Men character has fans excited, the actor has hinted that he would certainly be open to reprising the role again. As the MCU delves deeper into the multiverse in the new Doctor Strange movie, it is clear that there are endless possibilities about who could now return to the Marvel franchise as a variant of a past character, and Patrick Stewart would be happy to explore that further.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrived in cinemas this weekend and is clearly going to be one of the biggest movies of the year so far. Having pushed up opening weekend estimations from $150 million to a potential $200 by Sunday’s numbers are counted, it is a good sign that Marvel’s expansion of the multiverse is something that fans want to see. This is just as well, as one thing that seems to be sure is that big things are coming across the multiverse, and if current rumors are to be believed, it will end up with the Endgame-level event, Secret Wars.

For now, the multiverse is just really getting started. After meddling in things he doesn’t understand, Doctor Strange is given a guided tour of the multiverse in his new movie thanks to the arrival of universe-hopping youngster America Chavez. Thanks to Chavez, Strange finds himself in front of the Illuminati, which among others, includes Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier. While speaking to Variety after the world premiere of the movie, Stewart spoke about his reasons for returning to the role, and when asked if he would do it again, he said:

“Charles Xavier? Yeah. There may be. You know, the whole X-Men comic series is so huge, so vast, there might be an opportunity in which he comes back. We’ll see.”

Professor X Could Exist in the MCU’s Reality and Other Universes

Of course, there is currently no word from Marvel Studios on how the X-Men will eventually make their first appearance in the MCU timeline, and there are many ways it could happen thanks to the introduction of the multiverse. One thing that is worth noting though is that while this is one version of Professor X, and another version is seen in the Fox movies, that logically leads to the conclusion there is another Professor X already somewhere in the MCU timeline. This could mean that we will see Patrick Stewart again, even just as a cameo when the X-Men do arrive.

When looking at it realistically, though, Stewart is not as young as he once was, and while he can clearly still master a scene, it would be foolish to think he could play a long-term Charles Xavier in the MCU when considering the length of time between movies in each franchise. The 81-year-old actor would likely be in his mid-80s by the time the X-Men’s debut comes around and could well be pushing 90 by the time a second movie follows, which would suggest that even if we see Stewart’s Charles Xavier again, it will probably be in some kind of torch-passing cameo to usher in the next generation of X-Men.
