Lionsgate’s latest action-thriller, Fall, depicts a chilling adventure gone wrong. The central premise of the movie is survival, and Lionsgate has crafted a story that depicts the mostly unseen side of daredevil fun. Both directed and written by Scott Mann, the film is produced by James Harris, Mark Lane, and Christian Mercuri. Mann is an award-winning director who has previously worked on productions such as Heist, The Tournament, and Final Score.

Lionsgate is no stranger to nerve-racking films. The studio has many notable titles under its belt, including the Saw franchise, the Hunger Games franchise, and the John Wick franchise. The survival genre is also something Lionsgate has previously explored. Films such as Open Water and Escape the Field have centered largely on fear, suspense, and survival. Open Water, with a plot centering on a couple who are left behind in shark-ridden waters after a scuba-diving escapade goes wrong, received a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews calling it a film that “twangs nerves forgotten since childhood.”

If this is anything to go by, Fall may carry the same adrenaline-pumping experience for viewers.

Fall: The Plot

Fall’s plot revolves around two best friends who live life on the edge. Constantly seeking the adrenaline rush to keep them going, life is about overcoming challenge after challenge for the duo. Taking everything with a dose of fun and laughter, the two embark on the most dangerous of adventures, seeking the thrill that comes with conquering their fears. However, sometimes, not everything goes according to plan.

Lionsgate’s official synopsis for the film reads:

“For best friends Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and Hunter (Virginia Gardner), life is all about conquering fears and pushing limits. But after they climb 2,000 feet to the top of a remote, abandoned radio tower, they find themselves stranded with no way down. Now Becky and Hunter’s expert climbing skills will be put to the ultimate test as they desperately fight to survive the elements, a lack of supplies, and vertigo-inducing heights in this adrenaline-fueled thriller costarring Jeffrey Dean Morgan.”

The plot of Fall sets it up to be a film that carries several important messages to its audience. The first is that actions based on the notion of “you only live once” can quickly go wrong if they are not well thought out. For adventure-loving Becky and Hunter, the abandoned radio tower would have been like the call of a siren. Climbing it would have been second nature. However, what came after, in getting stranded atop the radio tower, would have been completely unexpected. The film thus depicts how split-second decisions, made in the name of thrill, can lead to dangerous consequences.

Another important message that the film may take to its viewers is the vitality of knowing survival skills. Stranded and alone, Becky and Hunter will have to navigate not only the physical challenges of being stranded on a 2,000-foot tower but also the mental challenges of dealing with fears that would no doubt cloud their minds. The friends will have to make do with whatever limited supplies they may have in order to survive and keep each other strong. The physical and mental trauma that the duo will no doubt go through gives an all-new meaning to “expect the unexpected” for thrill-seekers. The challenges that partners in crime will have to go through for each other are explicitly depicted in Fall.

An official teaser trailer for the movie was released by Lionsgate on June 9, 2022. The chilling trailer gives substance to the official synopsis of the film, with a long tracking shot running up the entire length of the tower. The enormity of the tower is made explicit as the camera keeps moving upwards extremely fast. The sounds of screams can be heard in the trailer as viewers are then given a shot of the two trapped friends, with one holding another who is dangling off her rope. The trailer cuts into darkness just as the friend holding the rope lets go, causing the other to fall.
