Warning: contains spoilers for Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #3!The Joker is one of the darkest villains in all comic book history, so it’s no surprise that he has made an unbelievable amount of enemies that want to kill him – however, Red Hood may just be about to achieve something absolutely no one in comic history has done: killing the Joker twice.
Joker has killed an absurd number of people. He has left grieving families and injured heroes almost everywhere he’s gone. Which, naturally, has created a lot of people who want the Crown Prince of Crime’s head. Even other criminals aren’t particularly fond of Joker, with icons like Lex Luthor and Two-Face attempting to take his life on various occasions. Yet with as many enemies as Joker has, he keeps clinging onto life – something that won’t last much longer if Jason Todd has anything to say about it.
Jason recently moved on from his Task Force Z team, with Red Hood having been declared dead due to a fortunate misunderstanding. Granted a fresh start, he’s seemingly decided to dedicate himself to hunting down The Joker once and for all. Jason was famously killed by Joker back in the legendary A Death in the Family storyline by Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo. Ever since then Jason has, understandably, had a bit of a grudge against the Clown Prince. Jason has decided to get revenge on Joker after all this time, and readers are seeing it play out in Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #3 by Matthew Rosenberg and Carmine Di Giandomenico. Red Hood has made it very clear that he is going to hunt down and kill the Joker, and if he succeeds he’ll be the first person in comic book history to kill the Joker twice.
Jason Has Killed Joker Before, & He’s Aiming To Do It Again
While Jason is understandably on a mission to kill the Joker, he actually already succeeded in this goal, way back in Geoff John and Jason Fabok’s Batman: Three Jokers. When Barbara Gordon and Jason Todd captured one of the titular three Jokers, Jason was antagonized into shooting Joker in the head, killing him. While the story was considered non-canon at the time, with the events of Infinite Frontier bringing everything into canon, readers can assume this actually happened. This means Jason Todd did kill the Joker, but Red Hood himself states that he isn’t sure if it’s the right Joker – i.e. the Joker that killed him, or just a clone of the original.
It’s a dark and controversial turn that, given a fresh lease on life, Jason has immediately gone after Joker. While he’s of course helping others by pursuing the dangerous killer, he’s also seemingly returning to a lethal mission he’d decided to leave behind, and once again structuring his life around his biggest source of trauma. Hopefully, in getting a second shot at the ultimate supervillain, Jason can actually get a chance at some sense of closure.
Unfortunately, even now, Jason’s target isn’t clear. In Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing, there are mysteriously two Jokers at large – something Red Hood doesn’t yet know. While Joker may be too successful as a cultural icon for DC to ever truly kill off, it does seem that this new mystery is an opportunity for Red Hood to once again put the Clown Prince of Crime in the dirt, making history in the DC Universe as the only hero to kill off Joker twice.
