The actor has previously discussed being unaware of his character’s true identity for much of production, having gathered he would be playing some kind of villain based on the monologues presented in his audition, but not knowing he would become the franchise’s main antagonist. As audiences continue to grapple with the reveal, the man behind the character is sharing his feelings on becoming The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power‘s Sauron.
While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant, Charlie Vickers explains how he felt upon learning of Halbrand’s true identity as Sauron in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It was really cool because it was nice to know that the character had a lot planned for him. But to be honest, I felt a weight of responsibility and a real sense of privilege. And it was amazing to be able to portray this character at this stage in his journey because we’ve never seen him like this before. And I made sure I just took real care with my portrayal and learned as much as I could about the character. But it was more thrilling and exciting than anything.

In The Rings of Power season 1, episode 8 “Ramble On,” Galadriel begins to suspect Halbrand of not being all that he says to be after realizing that master smith Celebrimbor became more aggressive only after speaking to her friend. She later in the episode learns that there has been no King of the Southlands for thousands of years, meaning that Halbrand had been lying about his title and lineage. When Galadriel confronts Halbrand about this, Halbrand simply explains how he never actually said he was a King, he simply did not show her the full picture, and reveals himself to be Sauron, the driving force behind her quest throughout the show.
If to look back through The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1, it becomes very transparent that many of Halbrand’s actions alluded to him being a more sinister force than expected, including his hint of her enemy lying in the Southlands, and his lack of remorse for letting the others on the raft die. With production on season 2 currently underway, it will be interesting to see how the series will continue with this new plot development, as well as how Galadriel will change as a character knowing that she was directly related to the rise of Sauron, even if it may not arrive for years, as teased by showrunner Patrick McKay. Regardless, the attention to detail put into Halbrand’s character by Vickers and the new dynamic between Sauron and Galadriel will be great sources of inspiration for the writers of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2.
