Garfield Is Coming Back to Theaters

Garfield was originally published as a comic strip by Jim Davis in 1976. The cartoon follows an orange cat along with his human owner, Jon Arbuckle, and the family dog, Odie. Throughout the various depictions and adaptations, Garfield is typically cynical, lazy, and obsessed with food. Becoming a massively successful franchise, Garfield merchandise earns up to $1 billion annually.

Garfield has been seen on the big screen in years past. 2004’s Garfield: The Movie featured Ghostbusters star Bill Murray as the famous feline, and he reprised the role for the 2006 sequel Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties. The films did not fare very well with critics, and Murray would go on to joke about Garfield being his biggest regret with his cameos in the Zombieland films. Be that as it may, both films were hits at the box office, showing that Garfield can always draw big money.

Of course, Garfield has been on the small screen numerous times over the past few decades. He was in a slew of primetime television specials in the 1980s and early 90s, winning four Emmy Awards during that time. The success of the specials also spawned Garfield and Friends which ran from 1988 to 1994. Other animated shows have been developed since and it has been reported that there is also a new animated series that is in development at Nickelodeon.

The Garfield movie with Chris Pratt and Samuel L. Jackson is scheduled to be released on Nov. 22, 2023.
