Simon Rex has signed on for Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut Pussy Island, Deadline Reports. The Red Rocket star will appear alongside Channing Tatum and Naomi Ackie for the upcoming thriller. Kravitz, who most recently appeared as Catwoman in The Batman, co-wrote the film with E.T. Feigenbaum (High Fidelity, 2020). Kravitz will co-produce the film with Bruce Cohen, Tiffany Persons and Tatum’s Free Association with Garret Levitz overseeing the project on behalf of Free Association.

Pussy Island follows the story of Frida (Ackie), a young cocktail waitress living in Los Angeles interested in pursuing philanthropist and tech mogul Slater King (Tatum). Frida makes her way into King’s inner circle and is eventually invited to a party on his private island. Once there, things prove to be different from expected.

In a previous interview with Deadline, Tatum said the following about his character:

“Slater is a wild character, an extremely committed version — psychotic possibly — but an extreme version of myself. I’m very interested to see what humans are capable of, physically, mentally, spiritually, energetically, all of it. He wants to know what people are capable of, what they want, and what they are capable of when they want something.”

MGM acquired rights to the film last June.

Simon Rex in the Spotlight Once Again

After modeling for Tommy Hilfiger, Versace, Levi’s and Calvin Klein, Rex became a popular television star in 1995 when he became an MTV VJ. This propelled him into acting, and he later appeared on television shows including Jack & Jill, Felicity, Everwood and Summerland. In 2002, he was cast alongside Amanda Bynes and Jennie Garth to star in the first season of What I Like About You. His first major movie role came in 2003 with Scary Movie 3 (he also appeared in Scary Movie 4 and Scary Movie 5). In 2005, he entered the musical arena under the name Dirt Nasty.

Rex continued to appear in television and film throughout the years, but his portrayal of Mickey Saber in Sean Baker’s Red Rocket began to show him in a different light. He received accolades for the role of Saber, a pornstar past his peak returning, unwelcome, to his Texas hometown. Red Rocket premiered at last year’s Cannes Festival and was nominated for the Palme d’Or. Rex was the recipient of the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.

Rex has kept a busy acting schedule since his critically acclaimed portrayal of Saber. He will appear in multiple upcoming projects, including Pussy Island, Mack & Rita with Diane Keaton, National Anthem with Sydney Sweeney, Halsey, and Eric Dane, Down Low with Lukas Gage and Zachary Quinto, and Providence with Lily James and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
