He’s come across a lot of anti-Kryptonian weaponry in the past, and according to Superman, they all share the same critical flaw in their design.

Despite their popularity, every weapon that’s been specifically designed to take down Superman always comes up short of defeating him. One encounter with such a weapon allows Clark to point out the same flaw every ‘anti-Superman’ weapon shares.

As the DC Universe’s number one protector, Superman has no short supply of villains ready, willing, and able to do him harm. However, with the amazing powers granted to the Man of Steel, it’s requires a bit more effort to do him damage than any other hero. In the past, villains such as Lex Luthor and Metallo have exploited Superman’s weakness to kryptonite, as well as other weaknesses such as red solar rays and magic. However, no matter how many times a villain comes up with the ‘perfect’ weapon for defeating Superman, the hero always manages to overcome whatever a villain has cobbled together to do him harm.

And from the Big Blue Boy Scout’s point of view, all of these supposed ‘anti-Superman’ devices all share the same critical flaw. In Superman #702 by J. Michael Straczynski and Eddy Barrows, Clark Kent is continuing his journey to reconnect with average, ordinary citizens in the wake of New Krypton’s destruction. In Detroit, Superman discovers an alien disguised as a human thanks to Clark’s super hearing abilities. The alien implores the hero to come inside his home, so they can discuss things privately. However, upon entering, Clark is ambushed by an alien wearing a powerful suit of armor. The attacker is terrified Superman has come to send the alien collective back to their home world and has crafted their suit as the perfect weapon against Superman. Unfortunately for them, Superman mentions that these sorts of weapons always fail since they focus too much on hurting Clark, but not surviving him.

What This Means For Anti-Superman Weaponry

Clark is right about one thing. With all of Superman’s weaknesses out there in the world, it’s certainly not hard to hurt him. Despite it’s supposed rarity, kryptonite is fairly easy to procure as far as supervillains are concerned. Red solar radiation is just a matter of a few geniuses putting together that proper tech. And the DCU is positively lousy with magic users, meaning Superman could easily be harmed one way or the other. What people seem to miss is the time it takes for any anti-Kryptonian weapon to work.

An inventive villain could no doubt create a weapon that targets one of Clark’s many weaknesses, and there’s a chance it would hurt Superman. But it more than likely won’t kill him, and if there’s one thing that can be said about the hero, it’s that he’s one of the most resilient and determined people in the entire DC Universe. If Superman can hold out just long enough, he could easily attack and subdue the person operating the weapon. And once Clark has a hold of the operator, it’s game over. So much effort is put on trying to hurt Superman, but if there isn’t a way of protecting a weapon’s user, then there may never be a truly effective ‘Anti-Superman’ weapon.
