The Black Phone, a recently released horror film from Blumhouse, has received highly positive critical reviews. The project is an adaptation of a short story by Joe Hill. The writer is the son of the legendary Stephen King. The movie stars Ethan Hawke as a child abductor known as The Grabber, and Mason Thames as Finney Shaw, a kid who is taken by The Grabber, and who discovers a black phone that allows him to communicate with previous victims. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the motion picture’s director Scott Derrickson explained a change made to the ending.

As previously mentioned, the titular black phone enables Finney to talk to The Grabber’s victims. One of the deceased he speaks to is his best friend Robin. At school, Finney is frequently bullied by other students. Robin encourages Finney to stand up for himself. The two share a bond that is tragically cut short after Robin is abducted and murdered. After Robin is taken, the audience does not see the character again. Derrickson knew he needed to fix something because of Robin’s lack of a presence.

In The Black Phone’s original script, Robin was not in the room

The director said, “In the script, Robin wasn’t in the room. It was just a phone call. A day or two before we shot that … it suddenly hit me out of nowhere. I was like, ‘Oh, the audience wants to see that kid again. We got to see him again. It’s not going feel right if we don’t see him again.’ I was like, ‘Where’s that kid?’ and they were like, ‘We just flew him home.’ I was like, ‘Get him back. You got to fly him back.’”

Many in the audience grew attached to the character and wanted to see him again. Derrickson thought about what the viewers would want in making his decision. Instead of only appearing offscreen towards the movie’s conclusion, Robin got to have an onscreen moment with his friend. The other victims appear to Finney through their voices alone. They did not have the positive impact on Finney that Robin has. Robin’s appearance onscreen shows the significant effect he has had on his friend’s life. Since the main protagonist deals with both bullies and an abusive father, Robin is one of the few people to be nice to Finney.

Scott Derrickson did not have an elaborate plan to make the change to the ending. The director discussed, “I end up doing it all in one shot. I think a good director always has an antenna up trying to hear what this movie really wants to be. If you do that, you can sometimes make decisions that are bigger than you.”

Derrickson’s newest film is the latest in a storied career in the horror genre. He previously directed The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister. The latter also starred Ethan Hawke as one of the main characters. Unlike The Black Phone, Sinister does not feature the actor in an antagonistic role. For the former, Hawke has received widespread critical acclaim as one of the scariest horror villains in years.

The Black Phone is playing in theaters now.
