6 Black Widow – “I Doubt The God From Space Has To Take An Ibuprofen After A Fight.”
Natasha Romanoff finally got her long-overdue solo movie at the beginning of Phase Four, more than a decade after her MCU debut. Not only did Black Widow give Nat the spotlight that she always deserved; it also gave an unforgettable introduction to her successor, Yelena Belova. Nat has plenty of her signature one-liners, but Yelena is undoubtedly the funniest character in the movie.
From telling Natasha she’s “such a mom” to quipping, “This would be a cool way to die,” in the midst of a life-threatening situation, Yelena has plenty of great quotes in Black Widow. Her most hilarious line in the movie points out the difference between Natasha and her fellow Avengers: “I doubt the god from space has to take an ibuprofen after a fight.”
5 Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings – “A Guy With A Freaking Machete For An Arm Just Chopped Our Bus In Half!”
Every Marvel movie has an audience surrogate to point out how ludicrous all the comic book mythology is. Awkwafina’s dry delivery style was perfect for this comic relief sidekick role: “Initially, I thought your dad should definitely see a therapist… but then that dragon vomited a magical water map.”
Her funniest line is her “That escalated quickly” moment after the mind-blowing opening fight scene on the bus. She understands that Shang-Chi doesn’t like talking about his past, but she wants answers after “a guy with a freaking machete for an arm just chopped our bus in half!”
4 Eternals – “Karun, Did You Get That?”
For the most part, Chloé Zhao’s wildly polarizing Eternals refuses to conform to the familiar MCU formula. But one character in particular, Kingo, feels like a traditional Marvel quipster. He’s so hilariously vain and arrogant that instead of going into hiding like the rest of his Eternal brethren, he enjoyed the spotlight for three generations as a Bollywood star.
When the Eternals are tasked with saving the world, Kingo gives his human valet Karun a video camera so he can film his superhero adventures and turn them into a reality show. After blasting a Deviant with his superpowers in the middle of a heated battle, Kingo asks Karun, “Did you get that?”
3 Spider-Man: No Way Home – “Oh, Great, It’s Just Some Random Guy.”
Overall, Spider-Man: No Way Home is a bleak and bittersweet affair in which Peter Parker has to sacrifice everything and everyone he cares about in order to save the day and fix the multiverse. But, as always, there are plenty of memorable comedic moments, like Andrew Garfield’s Spidey asking if the Avengers is a band and Electro’s reaction to the similarities between his and the Sandman’s origin stories: “Gotta be careful where you fall.”
But the funniest line in the movie is Ned’s priceless reaction to Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker stepping through a magical portal in civilian clothes. Since he doesn’t recognize Maguire as a beloved webslinger and just sees a “cool youth pastor,” a disappointed Ned says, “Oh, great, it’s just some random guy.” It’s a hysterically anticlimactic payoff to the moment that Spider-Man fans waited 15 years to see.
2 Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness – “This Time, It’s Gonna Take More Than Killing Me To Kill Me!”
Given that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was Disney’s biggest summer tentpole with a PG-13 rating, some fans cast doubt on whether Sam Raimi would be able to really let loose with his gonzo vision of horror. But Multiverse of Madness turned out to be Raimi’s Raimi-est movie in years, with his signature blend of grisly horror and camp humor – especially in the big finale.
As Strange dream-walks into his own corpse on Earth-616, he confronts the Scarlet Witch with a ridiculous one-liner: “This time, it’s gonna take more than killing me to kill me!” What gives this line an extra comical zing is that in the universe he’s dream-walking from, Christine Palmer hears Strange utter this one-liner and gives him a look like, “Really? That’s the line?”
1 Thor: Love And Thunder – “You Flicked Too Hard, Dammit!”
Taika Waititi continued his comedic revamp of Odinson’s solo adventures in Thor: Love and Thunder. But with storylines like Jane Foster’s cancer treatments and Gorr the God Butcher’s abduction of terrified children, the goofy humor resulted in a tonal inconsistency that divided fans and critics. Still, there are plenty of great gags in the movie.
When Thor infiltrates Omnipotent City in a disguise in an attempt to recruit Zeus’ help, he’s captured by the Greek god and restrained with godly energy. Zeus tries to reveal the troublemaker beneath the disguise with a magical flick, but he flicks too hard and sends all of Thor’s clothes flying across the room.
