Sam Raimi isn’t bothered by Tobey Maguire’s famous dance getting memed frequently by fans as the director says the scene was supposed to be amusing.

One of the most memorable moments to come from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 is the famous dance scene. Sporting an alternate look that’s part of his “Emo Peter Parker” phase, Tobey Maguire dances in a way that made many viewers laugh while drawing criticism from others. In the years since Raimi’s third Spidey film was released in 2007, that scene has been brought back into the spotlight through constant memes, GIFs, and edited video clips.

Sam Raimi addressed Maguire’s dance in a new interview with Fandom. The director is not offended by so many people finding the dance to be so funny, especially as the memes have continued to roll out. Raimi says the scene was designed to be funny, though it didn’t seem to be taken that way by many filmgoers at the time. Even if the laughs are coming late, Raimi’s now just happy to know that the scene turned out amuse so many people all these years later.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Well, we meant it to be funny, actually. It was Peter Parker’s version — this lame kid — of what it must be like to be his evil self. But he’s so whipped. He’s so out of it that that’s his take on it. And that didn’t go over well with the audience. But that’s what we were trying to do. So I’m not surprised that people… I’m glad people find it funny! We wanted it to be fun.”

Spider-Man 3 is widely considered by fans to be the weakest of Raimi’s trilogy, as there were many other complaints critics had beyond Peter Parker’s dancing. The bad reviews did not help production on a planned Spider-Man 4, a sequel that ultimately fell apart with Raimi parting ways with Marvel. From there, Spidey has been rebooted multiple times with Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland taking over, though all three united in the smash hit film Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Sam Raimi Has Returned to Marvel But Has No Plans to Revisit Spider-Man

Sam Raimi has also made his way back to Marvel, but not to do more work with Spider-Man. He helmed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is now screening in theaters. Now that Raimi is back in the Marvel fold, some fans have campaigned for him to finally make the canceled Spider-Man 4. There are no plans at this time for Spider-Man 4 to happen, however, as Raimi recently told Screen Rant that he hasn’t even bothered pursuing that matter.

“I currently don’t have any plans to make Spider-Man 4. And they’re so successful with the new Spider-Man series that I don’t know if that’s gonna happen or not. I haven’t pursued that.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness performing so well at the box office will increase the odds of Raimi doing more work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future. The question is if he will ever be back at the helm for another Spider-Man movie, or if he’d instead focus on a potential Doctor Strange 3 or another superhero project.
