One of the stars of Citadel isn’t actually interested in watching the show. Citadel is a show about two extraordinarily capable spies who are stricken with amnesia and left completely ignorant of their original lives. When thrust back into the world of professional spies and killers, they need to face threats across the world.
Yet Citadel star Lesley Manville isn’t interested in watching the show, as she revealed to The Guardian, and the genre is why. Check out her quote below:
“Oh, I can’t watch violence. I don’t watch any. It’s a big topic, really. I hate it, basically. I get offended by it. I really think it’s bad news. People talk about Game of Thrones. I’ve never been able to watch it. Also, it’s pretty violent towards women. I really don’t want to see that… I’m a woman, for a start. Being a woman is a political position. You need to understand what’s going on, the risks, what you’re up against. It’s as if we were doing all the work over here [with #MeToo], and, while our attention is focused on that, they’re undermining it over there. Well, haaaaang on. It was not a trade-off.”
With season 1 of Citadel promising to revolve around violence and action, it is hardly a wonder that Manville isn’t interested in the project. If she wants to avoid displays of violence — especially when aimed at women — Citadel and other thrillers likely aren’t a good fit.
Should Serious Violence Be A Part Of Citadel?
The existence of violence in movies and television remains a common topic of debate, and Manville is certainly not the first to raise it. While there are some women-led action shows, the majority are led by men, and women can often be made into damsels in distress along the way. That can be irritating in an era wherein women are working to claw their way to equal rights and avoid harassment within the industry.
Of course, it isn’t possible to fully strip violence from Citadel. While it may not have the level of violence against women that Game of Thrones did, the cast of Citadel includes Priyanka Chopra Jonas As Nadia Sinh. It isn’t likely that a leading actor like Jonas will have the opportunity to avoid the action that she signed up for. After all, if the show did lack action, it would be failing to offer exactly what it has already been advertising.
Even if Citadel can’t truly avoid bloody scenes and considerable death, it can still be done tastefully. Depending on the show’s execution, the violence can feel excessive, or it can be well-crafted to properly inform the overall narrative. Manville didn’t say if Citadel is uniquely situated against women, so it will remain to be seen if Citadel can be tastefully violent — even if Manville refuses to see it. Citadel is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 28.
