Randall Park, star of Netflix’s upcoming Blockbuster series, shares why he had to participate in the show. Blockbuster stars Park as Timmy, the owner and manager of the last Blockbuster Video store in America, and follows his efforts to keep the business afloat. The series is set to premiere on Netflix, the site that also housed the documentary film The Last Blockbuster, which takes a look at the real-life last Blockbuster Video located in Bend, Oregon.
The series comes from Vanessa Ramos, who previously worked as a writer on several acclaimed comedy shows such as Superstore, Crashing, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Whether Blockbuster will also take place in Bend, Oregon as a nod to the real-life store is not currently known, although it is possible. A previous casting announcement revealed that Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Melissa Fumero will star alongside Park in Blockbuster. Beyond the two leads, the series boasts a supporting cast that includes J.B. Smoove (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Tyler Alvarez (Never Have I Ever), Madeline Arthur (Snowpiercer), Kamaia Fairburn (Endlings), and Olga Merediz (In the Heights).
In an interview with EW, Park relays how the cast and script of Blockbuster were influential to his decision to be a part of the show. It helped that he would then get the opportunity to work with Fumero, as Park admits to being a big Brooklyn Nine-Nine fan. “I just thought [the story] was so great. Whether it had been a Blockbuster or not, I thought the story and the characters were so strong.
“There was just so much going on with these characters. There’s just so much history and so many complicated feelings, but also just feelings of real love and camaraderie… it just had so much heart. I think that that’s what really sold me.
“[Fumero] just came off of this iconic comedy show that I just loved — I was such a big fan of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. When her name came up, I was like, ‘Yeah, that would be great, but we’re probably not going to get her, she’s Melissa Fumero.’ And then we got her! And she was just so great to work with.
“Not just Melissa… the entire cast and the whole group. It really was a dream just working with them. Everyone was so sweet. I think you see that in the show. It really came from how we all felt for each other and for this project.”
Park’s vote of confidence for the Blockbuster script is significant for the comedy series not only because he’s an actor with a long-displayed talent for comedic timing, but also because he is a writer himself. In addition to other projects over the years, Park co-wrote the critically acclaimed 2019 rom-com Always Be My Maybe with Michael Golamco and his co-star Ali Wong.
