10 Valuable Free Items & How To Get Them (Without Stealing)

Skyrim is a timeless game where players constantly find clever tricks and great items to sell off without much hassle. Most of the time, valuable items require completing challenging quests, fighting powerful enemies, or outright stealing. However, a few locations across Skyrim exist that even a player fresh out of the tutorial can journey to for good loot.

Some of the best loot in Skyrim requires skirting around high-level enemies, while others require defeating some simple monsters like skeletons or wild animals. Some must be grabbed early on in Skyrim‘s main story, and some are intended to be somewhere other than where they are. Each of these items comes from Reddit user Peterlerock.

10 The Mzulft Store Room

The dwarven storeroom found near the ruins of Mzulft is an excellent spot to get some dwarven loot when players aren’t ready to fight Skyrim‘s Dwarven Defense Systems. Players can collect Dwarven scraps and ingots for future Dwarven crafting and pick the locked doors to access more loot. The door with the lower difficulty is full of ingots and features two chests. This storeroom is worth a stop for novice Dragonborns wandering near Mzulft.

9 The Thalmor Robes

When players approach the Shrine of Talos on the southern side of Lake Ilinalta, they will find the corpse of a Thalmor Justiciar. While the Justiciar has a darkly humorous letter on his person, players will be more interested in his Thalmor Robes. These robes sell for 410 gold (430 with the boots and gloves). Looting this man’s corpse is a great way to get these fancy robes without killing one of Skyrim‘s Thalmors.

8 The Hall of the Vigilant

The Hall of the Vigilant is a humble-looking building south of Dawnstar. If players get to this location before they reach Level 10, they will get to chat with the Vigilants of Stendarr, who populate the headquarters. However, with Skyrim‘s Dawnguard DLC, the hall will be ruined when players visit after Level 10. From there, players can freely loot the vampire and Stendarr corpses inside without fear of attack or judgment.

7 The Bonemold Armor Outside Ravenrock

When players travel to the island of Solstheim in Skyrim‘s Dragonborn DLC, they will get access to Bonemold armor. A complete set of Bonemold armor, including the shield, sells for 640 gold. Players can get free Bonemold armor by heading to the gates of Ravenrock. They will find a dead guard lying outside the gates while his commander fights ash spawns. Players can loot the armor off the dead guard and return to Ravenrock to sell it, and it won’t be considered theft.

6 The Flawless Emerald Near Anise’s Cabin

Anise’s Cabin is a small home off the path between Helgen and Riverwood, housing an elderly woman named Anise and all of her secrets. If players head east of the cabin, they will find a deer carcass with a flawless emerald resting under the ribs. Flawless Emeralds sell for 750 gold each, making this location a great spot to search at the start of a Skyrim playthrough.​​​​​​​

5 Giant Camp Chests

Giants are incredibly dangerous enemies who can one-shot most Skyrim players with their giant clubs. However, if players sneak around giants and their mammoths, they can unlock their chests and be on their way. One of the most notable giant camps is Sleeping Tree Camp, home to Skyrim‘s Sleeping Tree. While the chest is hard to get to without a fight, it rewards over 1000 gold.

4 Bonestrewn Crest

Bonestrewn Crest is a dragon’s lair housing one of the words of power that make Skyrim unique to other Elder Scrolls games. If players have yet to fight their first dragon in the quest ‘Dragon Rising’, the only enemies guarding the chest inside are skeletons. Although the word of power will be meaningless to them at that point, players can grab the extra loot early without fighting a dragon for it.​​​​​​​

3 The Diadem of the Savant

The Diadem of the Savant is supposed to be the reward for completing Shalidor’s Maze, reducing the cost of spell-casting for all Skyrim mages. However, for some reason, the Diadem of the Savant also spawns on a stump by Froki’s Shack. This circlet is great for mage characters but also sells for just over 1200 gold.​​​​​​​

2 The Necromancer Amulet

The Necromancer Amulet requires working through ‘Blood on the Ice,’ one of the best side quests in Skyrim. During this quest, the Dragonborn investigates a recent murder in Windhelm. During the investigation, players will find a Strange Amulet with a green skull on it. The amulet is another great item for mages but it reduces health and stamina regeneration. If players sell this amulet to Calixto from Calixto’s House of Curiosities, it will be renamed the Necromancer Amulet, and they will get 2635 gold.

1 The Dragon’s Head Carving

The Shrine of Mehrunes Dagon is already an impressive place, but journeying to the other side of the mountain reveals a secret treasure trove. As players follow the shrine’s back path, they will eventually come across a dragon’s head carving with an altar bowl. The bowl is full of flawless gemstones and other goodies. There’s also a locked chest full of gold and enchanted items. Many players don’t think to check the back of the shrine, but this treasure trove is an excellent place for every Skyrim player to check out.
