Colleges under central universities won’t consider board results for UG seats | India News

NEW DELHI: No weightage will be given to board exam performances in undergraduate admissions in all central universities and their affiliated colleges in the 2022-23 academic session. The University Grants Commission on Monday announced that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) score will be the basis for admission this year. However, the universities will be allowed to set a minimum eligibility on board exams marks.
For admissions to programmes on audio-visual or performing arts or for those under extracurricular and sports category universities or colleges can conduct and give weightage to practical or trials. UGC has also made the test broad-based by doing away with central university from the nomenclature so that state, deemed and private universities, too, can join. The computer-based test will be conducted in the first week of July and will be based on NCERT’s syllabus for Class XII.

On not granting any weightage to Class XII marks, M Jagadesh Kumar, chairperson, UGC, said: “It is not a new thing. For example, all IIT admissions use JEE scores primarily because of the diversity of the boards and the different kinds of evaluation systems. The same is true with the university admissions which is why we are giving one standard NCERT syllabus so everybody can prepare and have a common reference ground”.
Kumar said the CUET will provide equal opportunities to candidates across the country from different educational boards, and especially those from the northeast and rural and remote areas. “It is also expected to reduce the financial burden on parents as students do not have to write multiple tests for admissions. For the academic session 2022-23 all higher educational institutions, irrespective of whether they are state universities, private universities or deemed to be universities can use the CUET score for admissions in UG and PG programmes. However, admissions in the UG programmes in all central universities will be based solely on CUET scores,” said Kumar.
According to Kumar, the exam is to be scheduled in two shifts. “Shift one will have the compulsory language test, two domain subjects and the general test. Shift two will have four domain subjects and the one language of 19 choices given.”
He said the new entrance test will not affect existing reservation policies during admissions. “You just need to use CUET scores for your admissions. Let’s say a certain university reserves a certain percentage of the seats for local students. That won’t be affected. The only difference is that the local students or the reserved category like all other students will also come through the common entrance test.”
